BarCampMilwaukee: 24 hrs+ “Un-Conference”

September 30th, 2006
  • Tech Geeks Unite at Milwaukee’s First BarCamp “Un-Conference”
  • Sept. 30, 2006 10am - Oct 1, 2006 5pm
  • Bucketworks, 1319 N. Martin Luther King Drive, Milwaukee
  • For more information and to pre-register for the event, please visit barcampmilwaukee.com or contact Pete Prodoehl at pete@2xlnetworks.com or 262-490-4531.

Calling all tech-geeks! The city will be buzzing with robots, PDAs and remote controlled go-carts as Milwaukee welcomes its first BarCampMilwaukee, an un-conference dedicated to learning, sharing and participation. Yes, an un-conference — a conference where the participants create and lead the content of the sessions instead of having a single organizer or group.

“We want to shine a bright light on the technology industry in Milwaukee,” says organizer Pete Prodoehl. “There are great opportunities in this city, it’s just a matter of making all the interesting people aware of each other.”

BarCamp occurs nationwide as an ad-hoc gathering fueled by people who want to learn and share in an open environment. Technology and creativity focused discussions, demos and interaction will form an intense 24+ hour event. BarCampMilwaukee is FREE, but there’s a catch. “Campers” must participate in some aspect of the event, whether it be leading a session, helping with a session, setting up before the event or cleaning up afterward. This powerful participation dynamic creates a unique, technology-focused gathering.

Campers will expand their minds, share their passions and have an unforgettable time. BarCampMilwaukee will take place at Bucketworks.

Yahoo Hack Day: ‘going to SF for weekend festival of hacking, camping, music and web2.0

September 29th, 2006

This is a special event, as it is out of Chicago, but many of us Chicagoans will be travelling to Sunnyvale, CA for this sweet-action event. Be sure to RSVP here, and if you’re a Chicagoan, leave a comment below on this post.

From Yahoo’s announcement:

We’ll kick things off on Friday, September 29th with a free all-day developer workshop. Then we’ll launch a 24-hour Hack Day with an outdoor party into the wee hours, with special guests providing the soundtrack. (Details to come later, but we guarantee this won’t be your usual corporate-wedding-band leading the crowd through 2am group sing-alongs of “Brick House.”) We’ll hack through the night, keep going through Saturday morning, and wind it all up that evening with hacker demos, judging from a panel of luminaries. and special awards for the coolest hacks. We’ll have special guest speakers all weekend, with Michael Arrington of TechCrunch presiding over the festivities. After nightfall we’ll close things out with another round of entertainment that you would be happy to pay for, except that you won’t have to.

Update:

Most of us are taking a Southwest flight (only $110 each way) out on Thursday night and and leaving Sunday morning. Book a flight with us, or leave a post below to split up the hotel room!
Southwest flight details follow:

Depart Sep 28 Thu N/S MDW-SJC 2779 Depart Chicago (MDW) at 4:05 PM

  • Tues. Sept. 26th; 7:00am - 9:00am
  • Speaker: Craig S. Donohue, CEO of CME
  • Location: Mid-Day Club 21 S. Clark 56th Floor, Chicago, IL
  • Free for Members, $25 for Non-Members, $15 for CME Employees
  • RSVP: professional (at) ypchicago.org

What does it take to become an industry standard? How does one break down barriers in order to globalize one’s business? How do you lead a team that will become the model for others to follow?

Craig S. Donohue, Chief Executive Officer of Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and his team did just that when they transformed CME into the first publicly traded financial exchange in the United States. In December 2002 when CME held its IPO, the stock price of the exchange registered at $35. Since then, the stock has increased thirteen-fold! Craig and his team have built the largest and most diverse financial exchange in the world. In August, CME became the first exchange to be named to the S&P 500; it is the first exchange to be named to the InformationWeek 500; and the first to be named to Computerworld Magazine’s ‘100 Best Places to Work in IT.’ As the Chicago Tribune headlined last year, “CME is the Model for NYSE to follow.”

Join us at our CEO Breakfast on Tuesday, Sept. 26th, as Craig discusses CME’s overall success, his leadership methodologies, and personal insights with us. Non-members and employees of CME, prepay below and save $5.

CEO Breakfast are free to members.

Non-Members Prepay Here for $20

CME Employees Prepay Here for $10

If you are a member or you would like to pay more at the door, please RSVP to professional@ypchicago.org to secure your spot.

Hacking the Neuros OSD (IRC meetup)

September 14th, 2006
  • Hacking the Neuros OSD IRC Chat
  • Thursday Sept 14, 2006 at 9pm CST
  • The Neuros is a DVR for portable media players. And it’s built totally on open source software (there’s an active community to help you too.)
  • Access the chat by IRC at #neuros on freenode.net or with any web browser at http://open.neurostechnology.com/cgiirc/

More information is here.

During this weekly meeting, the head of the firmware division will patiently answer your questions about hacking the Neuros, no matter how stupid, ignorant or inane they may be.

It’s the last meeting before we go live with the Beta OSD and our small community will be quickly overrun with the clamoring hoards of outsiders (well I’m praying desperately for clamoring hoards anyway). It’s also special because I’ve invited some folks from the *gasp* outside world to find out about the OSD. Now these folks may not know the Kernel of Linux from the Colonel Sanders, but they have cold hard cash we’re trying to pry out of their fingers to buy the OSD.
