Business Bounce

June 11th, 2008

The BNC Entrepreneur Group is for small business owners looking to expand their network for resources, information, and ideas for growing their business.

Barry Moltz has just come out with a new book, Bounce! The Path to True Business Confidence, and will be giving a presentation based on this.

Conventional business wisdom tells us that there is always something to learn from failure. Not true - sometimes it just stinks! Failure that offers no real learning value becomes a big jolt to the basic business belief system. Both success and failure are simply outcomes in the lifecycle of business where repetition is inevitable and overall process matters far more than any single event or outcome.

Barry demonstrates that developing the resiliency to bounce through these cycles determines who ultimately will succeed. Using real life business examples, he shows that with true business confidence, we can face our fears, let go of shame and failures, use all our choices, be better risk-takers, and define our own brand of success.

After the presentation there will be time to meet Barry in person and for informal networking.

On-line registration will close June 9 or when capacity has been reached. To Register click here

Common Legal Pitfalls for Consultants

December 11th, 2007

These days, every business is faced with continually delivering products and services in faster, better and cheaper ways. Information Technology often is the key to doing so. Meanwhile, an increasing portion of the value of any business is more and more likely to be its intangible assets, such as brands, trade secrets, know-how, patents, websites, networks, information systems and, even, customer relationships. Similarly, technology now drives many major sales, purchases, alliances, ventures and investments. And the growing use of email and the Internet in the workplace presents unique employment issues.

How does this affect your business? The key takeaway is that every business manager should understand the basic legal issues encountered as a result of these long-term trends. Our speaker, Larry Zanger, will discuss a variety of legal topics including how you can create stronger contracts which address and protect both your clients and your business interests, how to protect your valuable intellectual property, and other important legal issues which you need to consider for both starting and maintaining a successful consulting business.

Larry Zanger is a partner in the Business Law Section at the law firm of Holland & Knight in Chicago and focuses his practice on corporate and computer law matters. Mr. Zanger has substantial experience in the representation of a variety of businesses in the computer industry and those involved with electronic commerce. Representative activities include acting as outside general counsel for computer software developers, computer consultants, systems integrators and software and hardware distributors and dealers, with matters also involving international distribution and the ownership of foreign subsidiaries.

Financing Your Business with Investor Capital

October 9th, 2007

In order for some businesses to grow, they need an infusion of capital. The type of capital depends on the entrepreneurs situation and the business needs. For some entrepreneurs, bank financing is the way to go. For other entrepreneurs, raising outside equity is the only way to go. Either way, it can be a challenge for most entrepreneurs to raise capital. Equity financing is often needed for a company to accelerate its growth and to get to the next level.

Learn from a panel of well-known Chicago investors what it takes to raise investor equity.

Topics discussed include:

  • How to assess if your firm is a good candidate for equity financing
  • Criteria an investor evaluates when contemplating an investment
  • Various forms of equity and what they all mean
  • How to better position yourself to raise outside capital
  • Role of an investor with the company after making an investment

    Panelists:

  • Matt McCall, Managing Director, Portage Ventures
  • Steve Miller, Principal, Origin Ventures
  • Bob Okabe, Managing Director, RPX Group

Moderator will be David Weinstein, President, Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center

The presentation is called ‘Pay Close Attention to What is Behind the Curtain’. Robert will be talking about all the things you need to consider when choosing a telecommunications service for your company.

You will notice that with this event there are some differences: 1) it is an early evening/after work event, 2) it is scheduled to last 2 hours, 3) the first 30 minutes will be used for mingling and 4) there will be a cash bar. At 6:00 pm, we will have the 15 minute presentation from Robert Harney and then we will begin our speed networking table rotations.

All attendees will be charged a fee of $ 17.00 which covers the cost of some appetizers and the room. Because we will have a cash bar, you will be responsible for paying for your own drinks. The registration fee will be collected on line at http://sept07bncitgroup.eventbrite.com. Once you have paid the registration fee, you will receive an email confirming your RSVP.

RSVPs will be required in order to attend the event. Midtown Kitchen & Bar requires a guaranteed head count by Friday, Sept 21, at noon. Therefore, no reservations will be accepted after Friday, Sept 21st at 11:00am CST.

Space is limited so make your reservation early. Once all seats are filled, you must send me an email to have your name put on the wait list. If space opens up, you will be sent an email or I will call you to tell you how to submit your registration fee and receive your RSVP confirmation.

Please bring your business cards and/or hand bills which you can share with the other attendees when you move from table to table. An attendee list will be included in the handouts packet which is distributed to all attendees.

    To contact me:
    Call: 312-431-8335
    Email: jpic333@hotmail.com

We actually had to turn people away at our last event. Our group is growing. I am starting out with 36 spaces this time. However, I expect that the space will be filled quickly so don’t wait until the last minute. Sign-up early to make sure you can attend our first evening networking event.

    See you there,
Jean Pickering President The Tektite Group, LLC

    MySQL Camp 2 in NYC

    August 23rd, 2007

Jay Pipes just posted about the new MySQL camp that will occur in NYC this August. Tickets from Chicago are under $ 200 round trip if you buy them soon.

Want to go? Please leave a comment below. I’m buying tickets soon, I’ll wait on finalizing on the flight dates for a week or so.

    From Jay:

Book Your Tickets. MySQL Camp II is Coming on August 23-24

I just got off the phone with Carl Skelton from Polytechnic University and we have finalized the dates for the next camp. MySQL Camp II will be held on Thursday and Friday, August 23-24, in Brooklyn, New York. Polytechnic University has graciously offered to host the camp. More details to follow about the new camp website, places to stay around Polytechnic, and much more. But I wanted to give everyone a heads up. If MySQL Camp II is anything like MySQL Camp I, I expect it to be a breeding ground for new hacks, ideas, and of course, beer.
