BNC Venture Capital Group

BNC Venture Capital Group

Business Network Chicago (BNC) is a professional networking and career development organization bringing together professionals to support members in all phases of their career whether looking for a job, clients, talent, capital, strategic alliances, or innovative ideas.

ITA is hosting the monthly BNC Venture Capital networking group. This group is led by Len Bland of Concept Equity Group. David Carman is CEO & President of the BNC.

We will begin the meeting with networking and follow with a presentation from Brogan Pharmaceuticals.

Brogan Pharmaceuticals is decreasing the time and increasing the number of drug products used to diagnose and treat rare diseases via the federal Orphan Drug Act in the US. Core competencies in FDA manufacturing, regulatory, and pharmaceutical formulation development are leveraged at the facility generating revenues outside of the orphan product development space. Ancillary operations include contract manufacturing and drug product development for research and development clients, orphan drug developers, and virtual pharmaceutical firms in support of their clinical trials. The mission is to be a vertically integrated, developer, manufacturer, and distributor of six to eight small market, low demand, orphan drug products each generating annualized revenues of $ 50-150MM.

Common Legal Pitfalls for Consultants

December 11th, 2007

These days, every business is faced with continually delivering products and services in faster, better and cheaper ways. Information Technology often is the key to doing so. Meanwhile, an increasing portion of the value of any business is more and more likely to be its intangible assets, such as brands, trade secrets, know-how, patents, websites, networks, information systems and, even, customer relationships. Similarly, technology now drives many major sales, purchases, alliances, ventures and investments. And the growing use of email and the Internet in the workplace presents unique employment issues.

How does this affect your business? The key takeaway is that every business manager should understand the basic legal issues encountered as a result of these long-term trends. Our speaker, Larry Zanger, will discuss a variety of legal topics including how you can create stronger contracts which address and protect both your clients and your business interests, how to protect your valuable intellectual property, and other important legal issues which you need to consider for both starting and maintaining a successful consulting business.

Larry Zanger is a partner in the Business Law Section at the law firm of Holland & Knight in Chicago and focuses his practice on corporate and computer law matters. Mr. Zanger has substantial experience in the representation of a variety of businesses in the computer industry and those involved with electronic commerce. Representative activities include acting as outside general counsel for computer software developers, computer consultants, systems integrators and software and hardware distributors and dealers, with matters also involving international distribution and the ownership of foreign subsidiaries.

Chicago Homebrew Computer Club

February 13th, 2007

Personal Computing as we know it today can be traced back to a few key moments in the late 70s where a few hobbyists got together to play with very crude computers at the homebrew computer club in Silicon Valley.

It has been a great ride, but we are coming to a point where the last 10 years of the PC experience is largely unchanged.

This isn’t about old computers, Microsoft, web 2.0, Google, Linux, or Apple. It is about starting off with a clean whiteboard, a crazy idea and what you would like to see the next 20 years of computing look like.

Improving Software Quality with Fault Injection

October 17th, 2006

Determining how your application will respond to real-world situations is not an easy task. What happens when the disk fills up, the network becomes unavailable or its latency increases, or a system administrator inadvertently removes a necessary file? Writing repeatable tests that create these scenarios can be tedious and error prone at best.

This presentation introduces fault injection as a very powerful technique for any developer to have in their toolkit. A brief introduction to Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) and other similar technologies such as Javassist is provided.

About the Speaker: Rob Grzywinski is an accomplished chief architect and senior developer with expertise in leading projects with short development cycles and limited resources. His focus is on producing quality software that incurs minimal maintenance costs and grows to meet future needs. Rob has run the gamut from content management with the Tribune Company to security with RSA and from rich clients from to embedded devices.

On the subject of technology and innovation, Chicago is as notorious for its self-deprecation and untapped potential as Silicon Valley is for its economic vibrancy.

The focus is the intersection of technology and learning. Hear six inspired leaders share the opportunities for innovation that they see, discover actions you can take to make an immediate impact, and let our local political candidates in on the future we are expecting them to help us create.

Networking can and should be more that just an exchange of business cards and contact information. At our previous networking events, attendees have said they get the most out of networking when they have the chance to build a relationship through sharing information, resources, and what they have learned through experience. So we’ve designed a structured networking program for entrepreneurs to begin building those relationships. This program is called kNetworking for kNowledge.

It gives you the ability to grow your network using knowledge (giving or getting), which can translate into new leads, referrals, greater awareness, and a reputation as an expert. For those who are aspiring or emerging entrepreneurs, it provides an opportunity to learn directly from the experienced ones.

If you’ve attended any of our programs and seminars, you might have noticed that the content is often delivered by a panel of entrepreneurs. That’s because we recognize that entrepreneurs become experts at certain aspects of their businesses.

It’s likely that you are, too. Perhaps you have:

  • developed systems or procedures that streamline operations
  • found effective strategies to expand to new markets
  • overcome serious start-up challenges
  • learned how to network effectively

Because the “school of hard knocks†doesn’t really offer any classes, there are few opportunities for entrepreneurs to learn from others’ experiences beyond speaker-based events or formal mentoring.

kNetworking for kNowledge gives you a chance to be a resource for other entrepreneurs and, at the same time, to gain knowledge about what others have learned thorough their experiences, further helping you grow your business . Giving your expertise, or learning from another’s experience, can be the first step in building a valuable relationship with other entrepreneurs, a relationship that you and your business could benefit from for years to come.

BarCampMilwaukee: 24 hrs+ “Un-Conference”

September 30th, 2006
  • Tech Geeks Unite at Milwaukee’s First BarCamp “Un-Conference”
  • Sept. 30, 2006 10am - Oct 1, 2006 5pm
  • Bucketworks, 1319 N. Martin Luther King Drive, Milwaukee
  • For more information and to pre-register for the event, please visit barcampmilwaukee.com or contact Pete Prodoehl at pete@2xlnetworks.com or 262-490-4531.

Calling all tech-geeks! The city will be buzzing with robots, PDAs and remote controlled go-carts as Milwaukee welcomes its first BarCampMilwaukee, an un-conference dedicated to learning, sharing and participation. Yes, an un-conference — a conference where the participants create and lead the content of the sessions instead of having a single organizer or group.

“We want to shine a bright light on the technology industry in Milwaukee,” says organizer Pete Prodoehl. “There are great opportunities in this city, it’s just a matter of making all the interesting people aware of each other.”

BarCamp occurs nationwide as an ad-hoc gathering fueled by people who want to learn and share in an open environment. Technology and creativity focused discussions, demos and interaction will form an intense 24+ hour event. BarCampMilwaukee is FREE, but there’s a catch. “Campers” must participate in some aspect of the event, whether it be leading a session, helping with a session, setting up before the event or cleaning up afterward. This powerful participation dynamic creates a unique, technology-focused gathering.

Campers will expand their minds, share their passions and have an unforgettable time. BarCampMilwaukee will take place at Bucketworks.

Craig and his team have built the largest and most diverse financial exchange in the world. In August, CME became the first exchange to be named to the S&P 500; it is the first exchange to be named to the InformationWeek 500; and the first to be named to Computerworld Magazine’s ‘100 Best Places to Work in IT.’ As the Chicago Tribune headlined last year, “CME is the Model for NYSE to follow.â€

Bootstrapping Meeting: Direct Marketing free seminar

August 28th, 2006

Direct Marketing is a direct communication to a customer or business that is designed to generate a response in the form of an order, a request for further information, or a visit to a store or other place of business. (Also called Direct Response Advertising)

This month’s seminar will deal with direct marketing.

You’ll learn what is or is not legal to send via email and fax, how to save money in direct mail campaigns, and what works - or fails - in direct mail, fax, email, and integrated campaigns.

Direct marketing differs from general marketing in that the result of a promotion is measurable in terms of response. Direct marketing is also largely dependent upon the use of customer files and lists. Direct marketing is utilized by virtually every type of business and organization. However, the primary users are magazine publishers, catalog houses, political campaign organizations and financial institutions.

E-mail and Internet marketing may be attracting buzz, but there are still strong incentives to send printed messages directly to customers whom you select. Direct mail gives you complete control over who sees your marketing, in contrast to advertising in print, online-mail, Web sites, or television.

For small businesses, where sales leads and customer contact information so often fall through the cracks, being able to market pinpointed prospects with postcards, flyers, catalogs, or personalized notes is a terrific opportunity. A well-crafted, road-tested direct mail package represents a cost-effective sales cycle all on its own, including advertising message, presentation, special offer, call to action and, ultimately, deal closer.

If you take the time to do it right, direct marketing can generate gratifying and measurable results.

As you establish and build your brand awareness among your key audiences, direct marketing provides you with the opportunity to ask these key audiences to DO something.

Direct marketing, in one form or another, is part of all our lives. It’s used by just about every business and non-profit. on church bulletins and utility bills, menus left under doors, coupon ads in newspapers and magazines, inserts with your bills-even the ads on back of grocery receipts and matchbooks. And, almost all direct marketing can be done better.

Come prepared to ask questions because all meetings are interactive.

CoWorking Chicago informal work-up

August 22nd, 2006

I’ve spoken with many of you about our idea of creating a workspace where entrepreneurs, hackers, and tech geeks, can consistently meet and get work done together. Something like this, for Chicago.

We’re currently are looking for a permanent physical space. In the mean time, we can meet up regularly at coffee shops.

CoWorking is going to throw an informal working session Tuesday Aug. 22 from noon to 5pm at Argo Tea on Randolph and State. You show up and work in an environment of other tech geeks and entrepreneurs. It’s a community and productive thing, combined.

Place a yellow post it note on your laptop monitor so others can recognize you as a co-working person.

This is short notice, but Keith had to work tomorrow and we thought some of you might enjoy each others’ company and productive energies.
-Jonathan

Street (meter) parking is available in the area. Shoot for “free” (no meters) parking on the South side of the building if you’re lucky. And be sure to feed those meters; Brother Leader Daley collects tons of cash from meter fines in this area. Garage parking is also available across the street (technically across the interstate) at the very tall SkyBridge condo building.
This will be our best meeting yet! For folks who want to help setup, arrive at 6:30 and get first dibs on pizza-compliments of Uncle Roy (Singham)

TechCoffee - coding at the crack of dawn!

June 19th, 2006

This Monday is the first TechCoffee for the summer: 6-8am at Caribou Coffee at Lake/LaSalle.
The proposal is that every Monday morning from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., open source hackers meet somewhere in downtown Chicago and work on the projects that interest them. We could even setup projectors and let bystanders help find bugs on the big screen… or having a big screen would just serve to bystanders as a window into the wacky world of non-paid software development. It can reduce your temptation to just loaf around and read Slashdot….

All developers and technologists are welcome: Pythonizers, Rubyists, Perl Mongers, PHPimps, and Javanauts are welcome. Even Lispers, Schemers, OCamlists, Haskellians, Eiffelers, HyperTalkers, and Stegosauruses (COBOL programmers), too. :-)

  • The first TECHcoffee will be on Monday, June 19th, 6-8 a.m. in the Loop. Location: Caribou Coffee (Northwest corner Lake/La Salle)
  • Read more and RSVP at: http://TechCoffee.com

Chicago Python User Group Downtown Meeting

June 8th, 2006

June 8, 2006 7pm (pre-meeting announced on mailing list)
Monadnock Building, downtown Chicago
53 W Jackson Blvd at Dearborn, room 826
$3-$5 donation for room and board

Please confirm attendance by 3 PM June 8 by email to mtobis att gmail dott com; in theory you will need ID to get past building security.

The Monadnock is very convenient to all CTA lines and a short walk from the terminus of most RTA lines or the second to last stop (Van Buren) on the South Shore and Electric RTA lines.

Relatively inexpensive parking is available less than 1/2 mile away at State and Harrison, or on Plymouth between Harrison and Polk.

** There will probably be a pre-meeting at a nearby cafe (like
Intelligentsia) for early arrivals. Check the mailing list for more.

Topics
* Python Image Library (PIL) to rip the Unicode glyphs to create wall-sized ascii-art (Peter Harkins)
* UserDict (some Ian Bicking guy?)
* StdLib Roundup (everyone)
